In 1940, John Furgurson and Lester Gohler became the first official Smoke Jumpers in theUnited States, by parachuting into a wild blaze over the Nez Perce National Forest in thePacific Northwest. Ever since, SmokeJumpers have been going above and beyond the call of duty to help protect the environment, homes, people and wildlife from nature's destructive power.
In 2016, countless highly skilled emergency service responders came together to help extinguish wildfires engulfing 94,000 acres here in Western North Carolina andEastern Tennessee.
